CLARITY and Brain Microscopy
Our Core Unit applies and develops a new method, called CLARITY, which can be used to transform biological tissue into a transparent hydrogel construct while keeping the native structure as well as the molecular information intact. This for the first time enables optical and molecular analyses at the same time in a whole brain.
The technique is based on the replacement of lipid bilayers with a nanoporous hydrogel that increases the tissue permeability. This enables multiple rounds of immunostaining and/or in situ hybridization in a whole mouse brain, without sectioning the tissue into thin slices.
CLARITY will therefore be critical in expanding our understanding of the brain and of neuronal processes.
