Outpatient Clinic for Sleep Medicine

Outpatient Clinic for Sleep Medicine

In particular, the following disorders are diagnosed and treated in the Outpatient Clinic for Sleep Medicine:

  • Problems with falling asleep and staying asleep with pronounced daytime sleepiness (e.g., narcolepsy)
  • Nocturnal movement disorders (e.g., rhythmical movement disorders)
  • Unusual behaviors during sleep (e.g., sleep walking) including differential diagnosis of epileptic seizures
  • Nocturnal panic attacks and nightmares (e.g., in the context of a post-traumatic stress disorder)
  • Disorders of the sleep-wake-rhythm
  • Sleep-related respiratory disorders can be diagnosed at our clinic but not treated. If you are diagnosed with a sleep apnea syndrome that requires treatment, we recommend treatment in a specialized sleep laboratory.

Before your first appointment, we will send you our patient questionnaires. These questionnaires should be completed and brought with you to the initial interview. Firstly, an extensive sleep examination will be performed. Afterwards, further steps will be discussed with the patient. At this point, we will clarify whether further examinations or inpatient admission will be necessary for further diagnostics including sleep recording in our sleep laboratory. Our sleep laboratory has been accredited by the German Society for Sleep Research and Sleep Medicine (DGSM) since 1992.

Available methods in sleep medicine for outpatients:

  • Questionnaires on sleep and sleep diaries
  • Outpatient actometry: Body movements are recorded by a small sensor worn on the wrist for 2-4 weeks. This allows us to draw conclusions about the distribution of sleep stages.
  • Outpatient apnea screening: Recording of nocturnal respiration via a portable measuring instrument.
  • Outpatient video recording: Recording of nocturnal events by a camera which is set up at home.
  • Neuropsychological tests: Examinations measuring the level of alertness and attention (vigilance test).
  • Multiple sleep latency test (MSLT) for measuring sleepiness during the day: The measurements are done in the sleep laboratory during the day that follows the night sleep recording.
  • Sleep recording in the sleep laboratory including or not including video recording.

Available methods in sleep medicine for inpatients:

  • Neuropsychological tests: Examinations measuring the level of alertness and attention (vigilance test).
  • Measurement of orexin in cerebrospinal fluid
  • Multiple sleep latency test (MSLT) for measuring sleepiness during the day: The measurements are done in the sleep laboratory during the day that follows the night sleep recording.
  • Sleep recording in the sleep laboratory with or without video recording. For further details, please refer to sleep laboratory.

Therapy addresses each respective disorder and includes detailed information and counseling on normal and disturbed sleep. In some cases, further therapies will be offered such as behavioral therapy measures or drug treatment. Please note: We do not offer nasal airway pressure (nCPAP) therapy in our sleep laboratory.
