New cooperation for AI in psychiatry
Prof. Dr. Dr. Fabian Theis appointed external scientific member of the Max Planck Institute of Psychiatry
Prof. Dr. Dr. Fabian Theis is an external scientific member of the Max Planck Institute of Psychiatry. The award-winning scientist is a pioneer in the field of machine learning in biomedicine. He holds the chair for "Mathematical Modeling of Biological Systems" at TUM and heads the Computational Health Center at Helmholtz Munich, under whose umbrella eight institutes conduct research into artificial intelligence with a focus on health. Theis himself is director of the Institute of Computational Biology. He also coordinates the Analysis Working Group of the Human Cell Atlas.
In his research, the mathematician focuses on using artificial intelligence to gain a detailed understanding of the processes in human cells. Above all, he wants to understand which of these processes are disrupted when someone develops a disease. A comprehensive understanding of disease processes at the cellular level is essential in order to treat diseases in a more targeted and individualized manner. This is particularly important in psychiatry, as the roles of biological processes in many psychiatric illnesses are not yet well understood. The close collaboration with Theis will further develop the use of AI in basic psychiatric research at the Max Planck Institute of Psychiatry.
