Outpatient Clinic for Movement Disorders

Outpatient Clinic for Movement Disorders

The Outpatient Clinic for Movement Disorders at the Max Planck Institute of Psychiatry is primarily directed at patients with Parkinson’s disease (at all stages) but also patients with other movement disorders such as essential tremor, restless legs syndrome, tics and tardive dyskinesia.

Parkinson’s disease is one of the most common neurodegenerative disorders. The underlying causes of the sporadically occurring forms are still unknown. Epidemiological, neuropathological and laboratory-chemical studies suggest a multifactorial pathogenesis. Genetic predisposition, environmental pollutants and ageing processes play an important role. Contrary to many other neurodegenerative diseases, the symptoms of Parkinson’s disease can be treated successfully with pharmacotherapy and physiotherapy.

In collaboration with our Neurology Ward, we offer differential diagnosis and therapy initiation and optimization in an outpatient setting. We develop individualized treatment based on the patient’s diagnostic classification, previous treatment and observations of state-of-the-art research results.

Care of patients with deep brain stimulators

Patients with Parkinson’s disease who have had a deep brain stimulator implanted can be overseen by our outpatient clinic. This includes regular checkups for pacemaker adjustments and alteration of concomitant medication.
